Gustave Caillebotte (1848 – 1894) was a remarkable French artist who combined elements of Realism and Impressionism into intriguing scenes of daily Paris life. Originally an engineer, Caillebotte transitioned to painting after attending art school, where he was highly influenced by Impressionists Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Pierre Renoir. Caillebotte’s style, with its tightly rendered forms, subdued colors, and daring, photographic style, was more realistic than the work of his fellow artists. Although his first painting was barred from exhibition, 40 of his 500 works are now displayed in Paris’ distinguished Musee d’Orsay.
